OK, I confess! After spending months and months saying how I’d never sell out to Apple and I’d never get an iPhone I folded and got one. Actually, it’s worse than that – we all have one.
One of the main reasons I made the change was because Apple began to allow third party developers to provide applications for iPhone. For me this meant there was a chance it could become a really useful device, rather than a pretty cool media player that could also make phone calls.
While a large number of the new apps living in Apple’s App Store are nothing to write home about, some are actually really good.
One example of a really good app is Tweetie. This is an interface that allows you to keep up to date with what is happening on Twitter. Twitter is something else that I had thought was a bit pointless, but since I figured it out has become part of my daily life.
The Tweetie guys have done a really nice job of bringing the Twitter experience to a small device. Tweetie lets me see what is happening on my home page, see my replies, lets me make new Tweets, reply to others and Re-Tweet. Pretty much everything I would need to do.
The search function in Tweetie is actually much better than using the Twitter site on my desktop. I can save searches, check trends, see what is happening in my area (thanks to the iPhone location aware features), the list goes on. Tweetie also handles multiple accounts which is a useful feature.
Tweetie isn’t free, it costs about $3. Before buying, I tried out some of the free Twitter apps and I’d suggest you do the same. If you find something for free that meets your needs you’d be best to stick with it.
So I’m very pleased that I invested in Tweetie. It is a great app and gets better with each update.
